I tailor each handpan to a specific person. I start with the scale—because it gives the instrument its character.
Handpan D Kurd is the safest choice to start with: a full, melodic sound that's easy to find your way around.
Handpan Pygmy plays quieter and more meditatively - I often play this scale myself.
Handpan Amara sounds brighter, lighter and more open.
If you are looking for a more spacious, bright atmosphere, see also handpan Aegean.
I also help choose the material. Standard stainless steel can produce a brighter, tighter, and more expressive sound, while premium stainless steel is more often associated with a warmer, deeper character and longer sustain. I often recommend the 10-note version to beginners—it's easier to find learning materials for it, and the extra note really expands what you can play.
Struggling between scales? Let me know—I'll suggest what suits your playing style.
