Handpan Sounds - How to Choose the Scale and Key for Yourself?

The handpan is an instrument that delights with the richness and depth of its sound—it can be low, warm, and meditative, or brighter, more melodic, and energetic. The instrument's character is determined primarily by: scale, key, octave of the ding, number of notes, material, and method of construction. What is the difference between a low sound and a high sound?

• Low-pitched sounds: deep, warm, and soothing—ideal for meditation, relaxation, sound healing, and quiet playing. They create a feeling of grounding and a pleasant vibration in the body.
• Higher pitches: brighter, more penetrating and energetic – they work well in dynamic playing, improvisation and recordings, as well as when the handpan needs to cut through other instruments more easily.

The pitch of a sound depends on its frequency—the higher the frequency, the higher the perceived sound. In practice, however, the octave of the ding, or central note of the handpan, is equally important.

It is worth distinguishing between pitch of sounds From the nature of the scale. For example, C3 is lower than D3, but the C Major scale can be perceived as brighter and more cheerful than D Kurd because it is major. Terms like "bright," "melancholic," or "meditative" therefore primarily describe the mood of the scale, not just the pitch of its ding.

The most popular handpan tones and their characteristics

Note: The note layouts shown are examples and may vary depending on the model and the number of sound fields. The same scale, e.g., Kurd, Pygmy, or Hijaz, may appear in a lower or higher variant. Descriptions of the tonal character are approximate; the scale's perception also depends on the octave, instrument material, and playing style. The frequencies given refer to the A4 tuning = 440 Hz. In the 432 Hz variant, the same notes have slightly lower frequencies.

How to choose a low or high-pitched handpan?

If you are looking for a lower, fuller sound and a meditative character:

• Choose a handpan with a central note, or ding, in a lower register, such as G2, C3, D3, or F3.
• If you're also looking for a calm, introspective feel, consider minor and pentatonic scales like D Kurd, F Pygmy, or F# Low Pygmy. The lower C Major can also have a low ding, but retains a more upbeat, major character.
• A larger instrument body, e.g., around 53 cm, usually produces a deeper and fuller sound, although the final effect also depends on the material, construction, and tuning.

If you want a more cheerful personality or a higher, more penetrating register:

• If you're looking for a brighter, more open feel, consider major scales like C Major or G Major. However, the key name itself doesn't indicate how high a particular instrument is—the octave of the ding also determines that.
• If a higher and more penetrating sound is more important to you, choose a handpan with a ding or additional sound fields in the higher register.
• Mutants with additional high notes or higher variants of minor scales, such as C# Minor, can also be a good solution. These retain the emotional character of the scale but can sound more expressive and selective.
• A smaller instrument, e.g. around 50 cm, may produce a more compact, selective and penetrating sound, although the material, construction and tuning method are also important.

Examples of scales and their sounds

• D Kurd (D minor):
  Warm, melodic and slightly melancholic - very popular with beginners and for calm, intuitive playing.
• Amara / Celtic Minor:
  A warm, gentle, and intuitive minor scale, often chosen by beginners. If you're looking for a sound similar to D Kurd, but a bit more open and melodic, this might be a good choice. Amara scale handpan.
• F Pygmy:
  Earthy, sparse, and meditative in nature. How low a particular instrument sounds depends on the scale variant and octave of the ding.
• C Major:
  A cheerful, open, and light character. A C Major with a C3 ding can be lower than a D Kurd with a D3 ding, yet still sound brighter in terms of the scale's mood.
• C# Minor:
  Emotional, expressive, and intense. In higher variations, it can sound more penetrating and works well in dynamic playing, recordings, and arrangements with other instruments.

Oriental scales - Hijaz and Byzantine scale

G Hijaz is an Arabic scale with an oriental flavor, with a characteristic tension and a augmented second between the 2nd and 3rd notes. It produces a mysterious, cinematic, and emotional sound, associated with Middle Eastern music.

In addition to minor, major, and pentatonic scales, handpans are also built in scales inspired by oriental sounds. In Miłość i Spokój's offering, the Hijaz scale is available as G Hijaz and Hijaz G2 Low Pitch, a warmer, more bassy variant for people looking for a deeper, oriental sound.

The Byzantine scale (also known as the double harmonic) is an even more intense variant of the oriental sound. Unlike the Hijaz, which has a single, distinctive augmented second, the Byzantine scale has two—hence its stronger, more dramatic character, well-known from Balkan, Middle Eastern, and classical Indian music. What else influences the sound of the handpan?

• Playing technique:
  The way it is struck and damped helps to bring out extra bass or emphasise treble.

  432 Hz - often chosen by people playing solo, meditatively and for relaxation; 440 Hz - more practical if you want to play with other instruments, record with backing tracks or more easily adjust the handpan to a standard tuning.

Examples of note frequencies

Note: D3 and D4 are the same D note, but in different octaves. D3 sounds lower, warmer, and bassier, while D4 is brighter and higher. These values are for a 440 Hz tuning.

Whether the instrument sounds low or high is primarily determined by the octave of the ding and the register of the remaining notes. A cheerful, melancholic, meditative, or tense character, however, results primarily from the arrangement of notes within the scale. Therefore, a C Major with a C3 ding can be lower than a D Kurd with a D3 ding, while still sounding brighter and more cheerful. For deeper registers, choose lower variants, such as G2, C3, D3, or F3. Minor and pentatonic scales are well suited for calm, introspective playing, while major scales usually have a more open and cheerful character.
