Does a stainless steel handpan require heat treatment?
It's impossible to assume that every stainless steel handpan has to be produced exactly the same way. Some employ separate heat treatment in the furnace, while others base the process on several stages of tuning and localized work with the material.
Simply omitting the furnace doesn't automatically mean the instrument will be of poor quality. What matters is the efficiency of the entire process and the experience of the tuner. However, for the premium stainless steel handpans available in my offer, I have adopted one consistent standard: each instrument undergoes controlled heat treatment in a furnace.

Why is heat treatment used?
During subsequent stages of instrument development, especially during the preparation and tuning of the sound fields, the material is subjected to mechanical stresses. These stresses can affect its behavior during subsequent tuning. Properly planned heat treatment helps stabilize the steel and prepare it for subsequent stages of work.

- Supports the durability of the outfit – proper stabilization of the material can limit its subsequent deformation, although the durability of the outfit is also influenced by the quality of workmanship, the way of playing and handpan storage.
Furnace processing versus burner heating
The furnace and the burner are not two identical methods that achieve the same result. They affect the steel in different ways and can be used at different stages of production.
- The furnace allows for even heating of the entire instrument and more precise control of processing temperature and time.
- The burner works locally, therefore it requires a lot of experience and careful control to avoid local overheating of the material.
- The process carried out in the furnace is more repeatable, because the entire instrument is in similar thermal conditions.
This doesn't mean the burner is an unprofessional tool. Many experienced makers use localized heating when working on or tuning their instrument. However, in the Mystic Series, the most important stabilization step takes place in a temperature-controlled industrial furnace.
How does heat treatment affect the sound of a handpan?
Heat treatment alone doesn't impart a specific sound to an instrument. The warmth of the tone, the length of the sustain, and the character of the sound depend primarily on the type of steel, the instrument's construction, the size of the sound fields, and the work of the tuner.
Its influence is primarily indirect. Properly stabilized material allows the tuner to work more precisely on the fundamental frequency and the components of each sound field. This allows the instrument to maintain a coherent, orderly sound and good balance between individual notes.
