Handpan quality can be heard in the first seconds of the game. I pick it up two tools from the same steel – and each one sings differently. The quality of a handpan is determined by four things: material, forging, tuning, and the maker's feel. Let's break them down one by one—how I evaluate an instrument before I send it in.
1. Material - not just steel
Most high-end instruments are made of premium stainless steel—treated to better resist moisture and hold its tune longer. But even the same grade of steel can vary from batch to batch. Rolling and tempering alter the microstructure of the metal, which determines how the sheet metal resonates. Therefore, material is a starting point, not a guarantee of sound.
2. Forging and shaping – the heart of the instrument
The shape of the bowl is created by hand under a hammer. When maker It's breaking new ground; it's not just about hitting the frequency from a phone app. What matters is the stress distribution in the cymbal, the precision of the shape, and the experience of the hand. This is why two instruments made from the same cymbal can sound completely different.
My role starts later. As producer I don't forge the plates myself - I choose makers whose work stands out with its sound, and I check each piece before it goes to shipping.
3. Tuning and Harmony of Overtones
Each note isn't just one sound. It's a fundamental frequency and a whole set of overtones—harmonics that build the depth of sound. This is the difference between a good instrument and a truly great one. Good tuning hits the frequencies, but it does more: it causes the entire bowl to resonate as a single body, and the notes to sustain long and evenly.
4. Experience and intuition of the maker
The best makers don't just trust meters. They trust their ears. A good instrument isn't just about the mathematics of frequency—it's about hundreds of tiny decisions that make the shell "respond" to touch and convey the player's emotions. And that's where experience comes in.
W Professional series craftsmen with 3-7 years of experience work. The Mystic Series is made up of grandmasters with around 15 years of experience—a deeper tone, long sustain. You can hear those years. And that's something to think about when you're wondering, which handpan to choose, so that it will serve you for a long time and please your ears with clear sound.
5. How to recognize a high-quality handpan? (test before purchase)
The easiest way to judge a high-quality handpan is by ear. Strike each note individually and listen for how long it sustains and whether the tone is clear and melodious. In a good instrument, all the notes sound evenly, tuning 432 or 440 The Hz is stable, and the sound attack is clear and warm. Also, check the ding, the central note: it should produce deep, resonant bass that fills the room.

6. How to create the perfect handpan?
Ideals in music are subjective. Some seek a warm, enveloping sound; others, a bright and percussive one. There's no single answer. However, there is a common denominator: good material, precision craftsmanship, and a keen sense of craftsmanship, all of which contribute to an instrument with character.
